For our “Find an RV I Can Tow” tool, we’ve allocated cargo weights based on RV categories. (we’ve allowed 1000 lbs for RVs over 8000 lbs, 750 lbs for RVs under 8000 lbs, and 500 lbs for RVs under 5000 lbs for average Cargo Weight.) Always verify your specific vehicle’s towing capacity directly from the manufacturer before RV purchase or towing. You’re responsible for the safe operation of your vehicle and any towed RV. KEY TERMS & DEFINITIONS:

DRY WEIGHT/SHIPPED WEIGHT: THE RV’S WEIGHT AS SHIPPED FROM THE MANUFACTURER, EXCLUDING PASSENGERS, CARGO, LIQUIDS, OR EXTRA ACCESSORIES.
GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT (GVW): THE CURRENT TOTAL WEIGHT OF THE RV, INCLUDING PASSENGERS, CARGO, AND LIQUIDS.
GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT RATING (GVWR): THE MAXIMUM ALLOWED WEIGHT OF A VEHICLE/RV, CONSIDERING PASSENGERS, CARGO, FLUIDS, ETC.
CARGO WEIGHT: THE OVERALL WEIGHT OF PASSENGERS, FOOD, CLOTHING, LIQUIDS, ACCESSORIES, ETC., ADDED TO THE RV.
TONGUE/HITCH WEIGHT: THE PRESSURE EXERTED FROM THE TRAILER TONGUE/COUPLER ON YOUR VEHICLE’S CONVENTIONAL/BUMPER HITCH.
PIN WEIGHT: THE PRESSURE APPLIED FROM THE FIFTH-WHEEL KINGPIN TO THE HITCH IN YOUR TRUCK BED.
PAYLOAD CAPACITY: FOR TRUCKS, THE ADDITIONAL WEIGHT SAFELY ALLOWED IN THE TRUCK BED. ENSURE IT DOESN’T EXCEED THE PAYLOAD CAPACITY, INCLUDING THE HITCH WEIGHT AND ACCESSORIES.
MAX TOWING CAPACITY: THE HIGHEST SAFE TOWING LIMIT OBTAINED BY COMBINING THE RV’S GVW WITH THE WEIGHT OF PASSENGERS, CARGO, AND LIQUIDS IN YOUR TOW VEHICLE.
